What to Do After a Car Accident: 5 Essential Steps to Take

A car accident is something no one wants to experience, yet it happens more often than we might think. In Edmonton alone, an average of 47 car crashes are reported daily (Source: City of Edmonton).

Beyond the physical injuries, car accidents can be emotionally and mentally draining, especially when navigating the complexities of auto insurance and recovery. Knowing the steps to take immediately following an accident can help reduce stress and set you on the path to recovery.

Step 1: Monitor Your Well-Being

After an accident, adrenaline can mask injuries, making you feel fine initially, and then symptoms may develop in the coming days. There are often a lot of things going on in the minutes after a collision. Try to take stock of how you are feeling and ensure that if you need medical attention, you make it a priority.

Getting checked early can prevent long-term complications and ensure proper care.

Step 2: Gather the Right Information

Proper documentation at the scene can save you significant hassle later. Be sure to:

  • Take photos of the scene, vehicle damage, and any injuries.

  • Exchange insurance and contact information with the other driver.

  • Record the names of emergency personnel or witnesses.

If emergency responders like police officers are involved, take note of their names. Independent witnesses, such as nearby pedestrians or motorists, can provide valuable statements, so ask for their contact information too.

Lastly, move vehicles off the road if it’s safe to do so, and call 911 immediately if there are any injuries.

Step 3: Contact Your Insurance Company and Report the Collision

Notify your insurance agency about the accident as soon as possible. In Edmonton, reporting the collision to a Collision Reporting Centre is mandatory if the damage exceeds $5,000. Failing to report could result in fines, so ensure compliance with this requirement.

If you have injuries from the collision you need to fill out an AB-1 form to initiate coverage for treatment of your injuries. In Alberta, this should be done in the first ten days. You then have 90 days from the date of injury to receive treatment from the practitioner of your choice before an insurance company may start directing care.

Step 4: Consider Physiotherapy for Your Recovery

Many people experience lingering aches and pains after a car accident. Physiotherapy can help alleviate discomfort, restore mobility, and prevent long-term issues.

Keep in mind:

  • Early intervention can significantly speed up recovery and improve outcomes, minimizing the long-term effects of injury.

  • While your insurance company may recommend clinics, you are free to choose the physiotherapy clinic that suits you best. You want a clinic that has your recovery as the primary focus.

Step 5: Take Care of Your Emotional Well-Being

Dealing with insurance claims, repair shops, and paperwork can feel overwhelming. It’s just as important to care for your mental health as it is for your physical health. Take time to rest, regroup, and engage in activities that help you relax.
