Preparing For Your First Physiotherapy Appointment

We know that starting physiotherapy can feel a little intimidating, especially if it's your first time. At South Edmonton Physical Therapy and Sport Rehab, we're here to make the process as smooth and welcoming as possible. Whether you're recovering from an injury, managing pain, or looking to improve mobility, your first visit is all about getting to know you and creating a plan to support your goals.

Do I Need A Doctor's Referral?

Good news, you don't need a referral to book your first physio appointment with us. However, some insurance providers (or coverage through WCB) may require one to process your claim. If you're not sure, our team is happy to help you confirm what is needed for your specific situation.

If your physician has referred you, we will work in collaboration with them throughout your care. After your initial assessment, your therapist may send a short note to your doctor summarizing clinical findings and request any additional information that can support your treatment.

What Will Happen At My First Appointment?

Your first appointment will include a detailed assessment to help us understand your condition, movement patterns, and goals. Your physiotherapist will:

  • Review your health history

  • Ask questions about your symptoms or injury

  • Assess your movement, strength, and function

  • Begin developing a customized treatment plan and explain your treatment options

Depending on your needs, we may also begin treatment during your first visit. You will have time to ask questions, learn about your recovery options, and discuss next steps.

How Long Is The Appointment?

Most initial appointments are between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on the reason for your visit and the type of treatment you will receive. Follow-up sessions may be shorter and will be tailored to your progress and plan of care.

What Should I Wear?

Since many physio sessions involve movement and exercise, we recommend wearing comfortable athletic clothing such as shorts and a t-shirt. If you forget, don't worry—we have clean shorts available at the clinic.

To help keep our clinic clean, we ask that you remove your shoes before entering the treatment area. Feel free to bring a pair of indoor runners if you'd prefer not to be in socks.

What Are My Payment Options?

There are several ways to access physiotherapy services at our South Edmonton clinic, including:

  • Extended Health Insurance

  • Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Insurance

  • Alberta Health Services-funded treatment for fractures and surgeries

  • Workers Compensation Board (WCB) claims

  • Private payment option

If you are unsure about your coverage or how to get started, our reception staff will walk you through the process and answer any questions you may have.

We're Here To Support You

Your comfort and recovery are our top priorities. Whether you're new to physiotherapy or returning after some time, we want you to feel informed and confident about your care. If you have any questions before or after your first visit, don't hesitate to reach out—we’re happy to help!
